Baptist Sermons

As a member of a Baptist church, I believe that the closer we are knit together as a church and as God’s children, the better we’ll be able to be the bearer’s of God’s light in this world. What helps us to stay knit together as a unit is the individual commitment each of us takes to live our lives according to God’s word with God’s help and grace. But, that’s half the story. The other half involves worshipping together and receiving the word of God in a stimulating, impacting and inspiring manner so that we’re spiritually equipped by God’s chosen shepherds (our ministers) to face each week with faith and grace.
Sermons are the heart of church activities and a good one can have make the difference between choosing the straight and the narrow or getting lost on the broad, winding streets of folly. Sitting in church, week after week and listening to Baptist sermons, I’ve tried to identify why I found some church sermons more inspiring than others and that’s what I’d like to share with you today:
- Sermons based on practical situations facing us in our daily lives: As good Christians it’s part of our daily routine to commune with God and seek guidance for dealing with every single situation in our lives. Yet, as humans, we often experience a conflict or confusion about how best to react to or deal with some daily experiences such as a teenage child that seems to be slipping away from God each day. Sermons based on topics like these from inspired ministers can benefit the congregation immensely as they are frequently experienced yet can leave parents feeling inadequate and at a loss as to how best to deal with it in a way that reflects our Heavenly Father’s light.
- Messages that use humor to emphasize a point: While the word of God is not meant to be taken lightly, it helps us humans to accept advice based on God’s word more easily when the message is given in a humorous manner. Humor not only adds to the enjoyment of Pastor sermons but also works much better than a seriously admonitory tone that’s constantly talking of punishment.
- Sermons that are short, focused, well-organized and illustrated with everyday examples: Preachers that fail to organize and explain their Baptist sermons well tend to lose their congregation very quickly. The same is true for messages that go on and on. The best messages aren’t those that are excessively verbose but those that sparingly and effectively use the right words to share what the Holy Spirit has revealed.
