Every clergy has his or her own unique way of preparing and delivering Church sermons.  However, there comes a time when a clergy runs out of sermon ideas and needs to come up with something that will not only inspire the congregation but also be thought provoking.

Here are a few tips to follow in order to keep your sermons fresh and continually motivating –

• Read a lot of books. Many Christian books share inspiring stories about people’s lives and how God’s grace has changed them completely. See which story or idea in a book you can use and put it across in your own way. Apt examples taken from the lives of ordinary people make it easier for people to relate to and therefore gets their attention better than anything else.

• Use the internet. There are many websites offering ideas for sermons. Websites like www.SermonWorld.com offer all kinds of different sermons which you can adapt to fit your needs.

• PowerPoint sermons are an effective tool that many clergymen use today. If the place you are giving a sermon at has the facility of a projector then utilize it. In recent years many people have used PowerPoint presentations to effectively put their message across. Different people understand in different ways and PowerPoint presentations appeal to visual learners and aids in their understanding and retention of your sermon.

• When using a PowerPoint to give your sermon make sure you use the right pictures and illustrations to reiterate your message.  Don’t just add something that looks appealing but is totally irrelevant to your sermon, this will not only distract your listeners but also make a poor impact.

• Use more personal examples. People appreciate the fact that a clergy is honest. When people see the shortcomings in your own life and how God has helped you overcome these barriers they begin to look up to you as a guide and a counselor.

• Most importantly, the sermon should suit your audience. If your audience is mostly the older generation then be more sophisticated and formal in the way you present your sermon. However, if the crowd receiving your sermon mainly consists of the younger members of your congregation then use topics significant to youth, communicating via PowerPoint presentations and a friendly manner.

At the end of the day there is loads of information on sermon ideas in books and on various websites but you have to pick and sift through them based on your understanding of your Church congregation and their needs.

PowerPoint Sermons

Many preachers have been looking for new ways to present these sermon ideas to their congregation. They’ve found that the most impacting way is to use PowerPoint for Church sermons.  Below are some ideas which you might want to keep in mind when using a PowerPoint sermon:

• The most important thing to know before you use a PowerPoint presentation is whether or not the Church or location you’re scheduled to speak at has the facility to use a projector. If it does then it is advisable that you check and connect your laptop/PC/TV to the projector beforehand. If you have added some music or other sound to your presentation make sure you connect a speaker too.  Check if everything is functioning smoothly before getting up front of your congregation.

• Your PowerPoint should have information relevant to your audience. If you use a PowerPoint presentation that has 10 slides and you want to use the same presentation for a younger crowd then delete the slides you don’t need before you present it, as skipping the slides arouses questions and might sidetrack your congregation’s thought process.

• When designing your presentation make sure that you keep it simple. The focus has to be on the message and not on your PowerPoint presentation skills. So, don’t add too many animations and fancy designs. This will only distract your listeners. This also makes sense because long winded sermons and too many slides can very quickly lose your Church members’ attention.

• Backgrounds help grab your listeners attention so use them wisely. A good way to make people remember your sermon’s key points are to use them with eye catching backgrounds that will help make an impact. It also makes your PowerPoint sermon presentation look good.

• Using pictures and illustrations is a very good idea. This helps in getting your message across visually. However, make sure that your illustrations are appropriate and support the matter that you are talking about. If you see a picture that looks really nice and you want to use it, wait for the right context before using it.

• Many preachers use music to support their presentation. The music can be of light background music kind or an inspirational song. Again, if you are using an inspirational song the message of that song must add to what you are saying and shouldn’t just be something that sounds good.

Church Sermons Playing a Bigger Role

Church sermons need to start playing a bigger role in shaping the youth of today. The younger generation today is moving further and further away from God and preachers need to come up with unique and appropriate sermon ideas that will not only make the youth of today come back to the church but also help improve their outlook towards the world we live in.

• 1. Newer outlook – Gone are the days when you could still use the same moral story tales to get your message across to the congregation. This ancient style of preaching doesn’t appeal to the younger generation. Older Ministers born in more modest times have to first understand the present times and implications and then prepare inspiring Church sermons that show the youth the folly of following the present trends.

• 2. Topics – Most pastor sermons used to be based on verses from the Bible to which they attached a moral. However, today the need is for pastors to come up with more current topics. Topics like teenage sex, drug abuse, racism and hatred, bullying at schools and terrorism are things that a Minister can and should talk about. To shy away from these topics and stick to the age old sermon topics is an ineffective and unimaginative method that pushes the younger generation instead of drawing them to Church. To tackle these issues head-on will only help create a sense of openness between the youth and the Church.

• 3.    Modes of communication – In today’s digital age it is important that sermons are delivered not only through a mike but also via other audio visual aids. The introduction of PowerPoint presentation has helped make impacting sermons in recent years.  Another popular way of presenting sermons is by using videos. Videos can be used to introduce the Church sermon or many Church websites use trailers of sermons to showcase what the youth can expect the coming week, these trailers if promoted in the right way can help attract a lot of younger generation kids to come to the Church.

• 4.    Other ways: Many Churches have adopted audio-visual aids to help make impacting Church sermons. However, some have gone even further and with a lot of success. The new trend is to create Church rock bands that send the message across via music – a language that old and young understand. This method has attracted and has been found especially appealing by the younger generation. Many youth members who didn’t go to Church have come back to either join the Church rock band or to experience their music. Many preachers now successfully give sermons with the help of such bands that help create a lasting impression.
